The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vanilla Cloud arrived in 2024. Perfumer Claude Dir built the composition around a tension, the warmth vanilla usually demands against something lighter, more restrained. Vanilla Orchid serves as a continuous thread throughout the structure, present from the opening through the final moments. Pear and bergamot keep the composition from tipping into sweetness, their bright, crisp qualities acting as a counterpoint to the vanilla's richness. Aldehydes give the fragrance that lifted, almost transparent quality that makes it wearable in tight spaces. The aldehydic brightness creates a delicate interplay with the creamy vanilla underneath, neither element overwhelming the other. This is vanilla for people who don't want to smell like vanilla.
What makes Vanilla Cloud unusual is the orchestration around the vanilla rather than the vanilla itself. Vanilla becomes the constant, the thread that holds everything together. The aldehydes open the composition with a bright, effervescent quality that feels almost crystalline. Then the florals arrive, freesia and cyclamen, and they don't compete with the vanilla. They soften it, creating a gentle counterpoint to the warmth underneath. Pear adds a fresh, barely-there fruitiness that keeps the heart from becoming cloying.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, aldehydes lifting, bergamot zest brightening, vanilla orchid already present beneath the surface. That first impression is clean, slightly sweet, airy. Within minutes the bergamot fades and the florals take their turn. Freesia and cyclamen arrive quietly, without drama, creating a soft, skin-close heart. Pear lingers in the background, keeping things fresh without ever introducing sweetness. The florals fade gradually, and the vanilla finally makes its presence known in the drydown. Not the loud vanilla of gourmands. A creamy, powdery warmth that stays within arm's reach. Sandalwood rounds the edges and musk ties everything to the skin. The vanilla-sandalwood base lingers as the florals fade first, and the fragrance becomes something that feels like it belongs to you rather than something you're wearing. Close. Persistent.
Cultural impact
Vanilla Cloud represents a departure from typical fragrance expectations. The aldehydic-vanilla structure avoids the loud, assertive qualities of traditional gourmand compositions. Instead of building outward from the vanilla note, the fragrance uses it as a continuous thread woven through transparent florals and bright citrus. The result feels both modern and intimate. The aldehydic brightness creates an almost weightless quality, while the vanilla provides warmth without heaviness. Freesia and cyclamen soften the composition further, keeping everything close and personal.
