The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Puro Sangue means "pure blood" in Portuguese, a reference to the Lusitano Purebred, one of the world's most revered horse breeds. Daphné Bugey composed this fragrance to embody the horse's magnetism: controlled power, nobility without showiness. The brief was warm and captivating, and she delivered something that feels both modern and rooted in a centuries-old tradition of Portuguese elegance. This isn't a loud fragrance. It's the scent of someone who already knows where they belong.
What makes Puro Sangue distinctive is its structural honesty. The leather doesn't arrive late or hide in the base, it announces itself in the heart, grounded by cedar and violet. The top is brief: citrus brightness that clears the path. Then the composition settles into its true character, warm and animalic, with vanilla and tonka giving softness without sacrificing weight. It's a fragrance that knows what it is and doesn't apologize for it.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and brief, bergamot, lemon, a whisper of nutmeg. Thirty minutes in, the citrus recedes and the leather steps forward, violet lending it an unexpected floral softness. Cedarwood anchors the heart, giving the composition structure. By hour three, the drydown takes over: musk, patchouli, vetiver, and tonka bean weaving together into something warm and intimate. On fabric, it lingers well into the next day, a ghost of warmth that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Musgo Real connects to Portugal's equestrian heritage through the Lusitano Purebred horse, a symbol of prestige in Portuguese culture. Claus Porto's roots in traditional Portuguese soap-making, established in 1887, inform this fragrance's artisanal character. The 2024 release channels Portuguese elegance with a composed, noble quality rooted in leather-working traditions and equestrian refinement. Puro Sangue (Pure Blood) honors the Lusitano's noble lineage, making this scent a wearable tribute to Portuguese heritage.
