The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shoreditch is East London's creative quarter, independent shops, street markets, the smell of coffee drifting from side-street corners. It's where AllSaints built a lot of its early store network, and where the brand's attitude toward fashion took shape: understated, a little rough at the edges, more interested in authenticity than trend. Shoreditch Leather takes that geography and makes it literal. The brief was straightforward: translate the AllSaints leather jacket into a fragrance. Not a tribute, an extension. Perfumer Gabriela Chelariu worked with a leather accord as the structural foundation, then built outward into something that could sit on skin without overwhelming it. The challenge was finding the leather that felt lived-in rather than theatrical. The result balances warm spice, soft florals, and an earthy base that keeps everything grounded.
The composition earns its name through restraint more than volume. Leather accord sits at the heart, but it's not the harsh, smoky leather of vintage masculine fragrances. Instead, it's softened, jasmine and rose water lift the composition, while sandalwood adds a creamy warmth that prevents the leather from feeling austere. The top notes (saffron, elemi resin) arrive bright and almost astringent, cutting through the heavier heart before the base notes (vetiver, patchouli, amber) settle into something dry and intimate.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Saffron and elemi resin arrive sharp, almost astringent, before the leather accord takes over. The rose water threads through to prevent heaviness. Within the first hour, the composition begins its shift, the saffron fades, the florals soften, and the leather settles into something warm and worn. Three to four hours in, the base notes take over. Patchouli and vetiver create a dry, earthy drydown that lingers close to the skin. Amber adds a subtle warmth without sweetness. Six to eight hours after application, there's still something there, quiet, intimate, not announcing itself. On clothing, the leather note can persist until the next day, faint but unmistakable, like the smell of a jacket left in a closed car.
Cultural impact
Shoreditch Leather joins AllSaints' unisex fragrance collection, extending the house's leather-forward aesthetic into a new year. The 2024 release positions itself within the brand's broader fragrance identity, dark, understated, built for wear rather than display. Community reception highlights its distinctive leather character and seasonal versatility, favored in spring and winter. The fragrance sits within the leather and chypre families, offering an alternative to louder leather fragrances on the market.
