Why it exists.
The beginning
Born in 2015 from the house of Chopard, the 1000 Miglia line takes its name from the legendary Mille Miglia race. Extreme, the flanker, pushes that idea harder. Bruno Jovanovic composed a scent built around a single strange accord: asphalt, rendered into a fragrance note. Lavender opens the door, clean and classical, then the tarmac takes over. It's a fragrance for the kind of person who finds driving more interesting than arriving, who prefers the middle of the journey to either endpoint. There's something almost architectural about how the formula arrives: first the herbal clarity, sharp and green, lifting the composition off the skin.
Asphalt is a rare note in mainstream perfumery. Jovanovic went there anyway, pairing it with lavender, a note long associated with masculine fragrance. That contrast does the heavy lifting: the herbal clarity of lavender reshapes the asphalt, softening its sharpest edges into something hot and worn-in rather than cold and industrial. Cedarwood and leather in the base give the composition a warmth that grounds the more abstract asphalt note, anchoring it to something recognizable. The result is a short, sharp formula that doesn't try to be everything.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes belong to lavender, brisk and slightly soapy, herbal in a way that suggests an herbal garden at midday. Then the asphalt rolls in. The tarry, mineral character coats everything, and the lavender gets pushed into the background, still present but no longer in charge. A faintly bitter flicker registers at the edges, then settles. By the two-hour mark the asphalt has quieted into a warm, dry mineral haze, and cedarwood steps forward with its dry, resinous grain. Leather arrives last, soft and close, more suede than saddle. The drydown stays intimate, a quiet cedar-leather skin scent that lingers for another hour or two before fading completely. What surprises is how the asphalt never fully disappears, even as the warmer, softer base notes gather around it.
Cultural impact
1000 Miglia Extreme occupies a distinctive place among fragrances that lean industrial rather than floral, with its asphalt note placing it among a handful of releases that prioritize material character over conventional freshness. One of the closest reference points is Bvlgari Black, a fragrance that helped establish this territory and shares something of the same rubber-and-mineral sensibility. Where Extreme sets itself apart is in its commitment to a single accord rather than a blend of effects.
