The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The honeysuckle grows wild along the native forest pathways and rocky hillsides of the New York Botanical Garden, and it was from exactly that honeysuckle that Laurent Le Guernec built this fragrance. A collaboration with the Garden's Master Gardeners brought the Living Florals collection to life, drawing directly from the horticultural expertise of the institution. The honeysuckle in question blooms in late spring, filling the air with a sweetness that the brand has tried to balance with something unexpected, a hint of the forest floor beneath the petals. The fragrance captures the flower's authentic scent profile, translating that specific place into a wearable composition that honors the living plant.
Honeysuckle carries a natural sweetness that most fragrance interpretations tend to soften or amplify into something unrecognizable. Caswell-Massey approached this note with a commitment to authenticity, seeking to preserve the flower's genuine character rather than conforming to conventional floral expectations. The result is a fragrance that smells unmistakably of the blossom itself, with a presence that feels grounded rather than fleeting. The musk base reinforces this, giving the drydown a green, intimate quality that feels more like a path through woods at dusk than a vase of cut flowers.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: mandarin and neroli, bright and juicy, a flash of citrus that reads like sunlight through a window. The honeysuckle arrives to join these, taking its place alongside the citrus while the neroli provides a quiet undertone. Orange blossom appears as the composition develops, softening the honeysuckle with a more polished floral presence. Moss emerges as the fragrance evolves, the green element pulling the composition toward earthier territory, damp forest floor, cool shade, the smell of a garden at the edge of woods. Musk settles into the base, giving the fragrance an intimate character that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
The honeysuckle fragrance offers a distinctive take on florals: warm and close to the skin, moss-warm rather than sandalwood-heavy. It's the kind of fragrance that appeals to someone drawn to natural, garden-inspired scents with an earthy undertone. The Living Florals collaboration with the NYBG grounds it in horticultural expertise that elevates its botanical credentials.
