The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Artistic Lady arrived in 2024 from the bench of Adam Bujairami, the nose behind this particular fragrance. The composition wears its intentions openly: rose, clove, raspberry, blackcurrant, cinnamon up top, giving way to patchouli, incense, and sandalwood at the center, then settling into musk, benzoin, and amber at the base. It's a structure that borrows from classical Oriental perfumery, the kind of weighted, spiced-floral architecture that has carried weight in fragrance-making for generations. Bujairami handles these materials with the confidence of someone who knows the traditions inside out, reassembling familiar building blocks into something that feels both rooted and current.
What makes the composition worth attention is how its top notes refuse to behave like a straightforward rose accord. The raspberry and blackcurrant bring a dark, almost wine-stained fruit character that pushes the rose away from its usual bright, dewy register and toward something richer, denser, more brooding. Clove and cinnamon add a dry, spiced heat that reads more like smoldering resin than like baked goods, setting up a direct handoff to the patchouli and incense in the heart.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to the fruit and spice, raspberry and blackcurrant lending a dark, almost jam-like sweetness that the clove immediately complicates. That clove doesn't behave as a background note; it pushes forward, adding a dry, almost peppery intensity that keeps the fruit from tipping into something syrupy. The rose arrives wrapped in that heat, reading less like a fresh-cut bloom and more like a rose that has been steeped in dark syrup, dense and resinous rather than airy. As the composition wears, the top notes begin their slow retreat and the patchouli takes the wheel, bringing an earthy, slightly smoky weight that the incense amplifies. That handoff is gradual, the fruit thinning out note by note while the patchouli rises up from underneath to fill the space.
Cultural impact
Artistic Lady sits in a tradition of spiced rose compositions, a genre with deep roots in Oriental perfumery and a long lineage of grand, statement-making fragrances. The territory it's working in is well-trodden, but the specific path it takes through that territory is its own. Where many spiced rose compositions lean heavily on the floral as the central pillar, Artistic Lady pushes the fruit forward first, using raspberry and blackcurrant to darken the rose before the spice and patchouli even arrive.
