The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Twilly d'Hermès takes its name from the house's iconic narrow silk scarves, those colorful, irreverent prints that Hermès fans collect like talismans. In 2017, perfumer Christine Nagel was tasked with translating that spirit of youthful freedom into scent. Not a flanker, not a limited edition, but a full fragrance that could carry that energy on its own. The result pairs ginger, bright, almost candied, with the delicate creaminess of white florals and a soft sandalwood base. Nagel has said she wanted to make something optimistic and lively, a floral that refuses to be ordinary. The scarf became the metaphor: something elegant that refuses to stay folded.
What makes Twilly d'Hermès interesting is the way ginger and tuberose interact. Ginger brings clean heat, a spice without fire, while tuberose adds creamy white floral warmth. On paper, they sound like opposites. In the bottle, they balance each other, the ginger keeping the florals from going heady, the florals softening the ginger's bite. Sandalwood grounds the whole thing with a soft, milky woodiness that prevents the composition from ever feeling sharp or synthetic. It's a trio that shouldn't work as well as it does.
The evolution
Twilly d'Hermès opens bright. Bergamot, bitter orange, and ginger arrive together, a citrus spike that cuts clean and immediate. That ginger is the star for the first hour, juicy and almost candied, never letting the florals take over. Then the heart blooms. Tuberose, jasmine, and orange blossom emerge slowly, their creaminess softening the spice without replacing it. The handoff is graceful, no harsh drop-off, just a gradual warming. By the third hour, sandalwood and vanilla take over. The drydown is intimate, milky-woody, and close to the skin. The real staying power is in that base, where the sandalwood provides a smooth, creamy backdrop that lets the vanilla linger with a soft sweetness that clings gently to the wearer.
Cultural impact
Twilly d'Hermès arrived in 2017 as the house's younger, more optimistic statement. It brought a playful spirit to the Hermès fragrance lineup, one that embraces warmth and wit without apology. This scent marked a departure from the house's more restrained approach, offering a fragrance that communicates through joy rather than subtlety. The composition speaks in a voice that is confident yet inviting, refined yet approachable.
