The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Brunello Cucinelli approached its 2023 fragrance collection the way it approaches knitwear: with patience, material quality, and a deep sense of place. Working with Firmenich master perfumer Daphné Bugey, the house set out to capture a particular quality of light and air, the feeling of open landscape, in liquid form. The brief was simple in words, complex in execution: evoke the sensation of moving through a crisp morning, wrapped in something soft.
The key to this translation lies in chestnut, a note that sits between edible and aromatic. Here it is paired with orange blossom, which brings a sweet floral quality that keeps the composition grounded in something lived-in rather than idealized. The cedar and vetiver in the heart do not perform; they support. The overall structure holds together through careful balance at every level, allowing each element room to breathe.
The evolution
The opening is bright, immediate. Bergamot and mandarin arrive clean and citrusy, with pink pepper adding a faint prickle of spice. Within moments, the orange blossom surfaces, and with it, the chestnut. The transition is not dramatic; it is like watching fog lift from a valley. In the heart, vetiver brings an almost mineral quality, and cedar adds structure without weight. As time passes, the base takes over: musk and frankincense settling into something warm and close. The composition maintains its intimacy throughout, never demanding attention.
Cultural impact
The fragrance offers an intimate, close-wearing composition that appeals to wearers who find projection more awkward than flattering. It is a quiet counterpoint to louder offerings, positioning itself for those who value subtlety over statement. The approach invites discovery rather than demanding it.
