Heritage
A house, in its own words
Brunello Cucinelli was born in 1953 in Castel San Pietro, a small Umbrian village near Todi. He founded his company in 1978 with an initial focus on cashmere, a material then associated primarily with neutral tones for older customers. Cucinelli introduced colored cashmere to the market, a decision that proved transformative for the brand's trajectory. The company was officially established in Solomeo, a medieval hamlet where Cucinelli purchased a 14th-century castle that became the headquarters. The castle, situated in the Tuscan-Umbrian hills between Perugia and Todi, anchors the brand's identity and serves as the spiritual center of the business. Brunello Cucinelli S.p.A. was listed on the Italian Bourse in 2012, marking a significant milestone in the company's growth. The brand maintains a philosophy rooted in humanistic capitalism, with Cucinelli having written extensively about his belief that work should ensure respect for human beings' moral and economic dignity. The company has actively supported restoration projects in Solomeo, including a theater and cemetery, positioning the village as a cultural destination rather than merely a production site. Fragrance production began in partnership with EuroItalia, another company founded in 1978, extending the brand's heritage of craftsmanship into the world of perfumery. The philosophy underpinning Brunello Cucinelli emerges from its founder's conviction that luxury must coexist with ethical responsibility. Cucinelli has described himself as a guardian, a ferryman between the past and the future, suggesting a commitment to preserving artisanal traditions while adapting them for contemporary contexts. This approach extends to perfumery, where the brand seeks to translate the sensory experience of the Solomeo landscape into fragrance form. The house approaches fragrance as an extension of its broader lifestyle vision rather than a commercial diversification. Collections released between 2023 and 2025 demonstrate this philosophy, with names like Ombra Lirica (Lyric Shadow) and Soffio Zenit (Zenith Breath) evoking atmospheric qualities rather than specific ingredients. The brand emphasizes the importance of balance between innovation and tradition, a tension that manifests in the design of both garments and bottles. This humanistic grounding distinguishes Cucinelli fragrances from purely commercial offerings, positioning them as expressions of a coherent worldview rather than seasonal marketing exercises.
