Florian Gallo
Florian Gallo entered the world of fragrance through a childhood fascination with Grasse’s perfume houses. In 2012 he earned a place at ISIPCA, France’s premier perfumery academy, where he honed his technical foundation. A year later he moved to the Robertet school in Grasse, immersing himself in natural raw materials and learning the art of extraction. By the age of twenty‑five he secured a position at DSM‑Firmenich, first as an apprentice and then as a full‑time perfumer. Relocating to the Shanghai atelier, he became the inaugural scent creator to work from the company’s open‑plan studio, blending Eastern sensibilities with his European training. His early breakthrough arrived with the launch of “Wood,” a composition that married smoky cedar with a whisper of sesame, followed by the airy, luminous “Cloud.” Both scents earned praise for their unexpected contrasts and earned Florian a reputation as an innovative voice among the new generation of perfumers.

How Florian composes
Florian favors transparent accords that reveal their ingredients step by step. He often begins with a single natural element, such as sesame seed oil or a specific wood, and builds layers that highlight its nuances. His technique includes subtle temperature shifts, using cool green notes to accentuate warmth from amber or spice. He prefers raw extracts, cold‑pressed absolutes, and sustainably sourced essences, allowing the material’s origin to shine. In the studio he works quickly, trusting his instinct to capture the fleeting balance before it fades. The result is a scent that feels both immediate and lingering, with a clear, purposeful progression.
Philosophy
What drives Florian
Florian treats each formula as a memory waiting to be recalled. He believes that scent should translate emotion into tangible form, allowing a single note to trigger a feeling as vivid as a photograph. Natural ingredients serve as his primary palette; he respects their intrinsic character and lets them dictate the structure rather than forcing a preconceived idea. Collaboration fuels his process, but the final decision always rests on whether the fragrance feels honest to his inner narrative. He seeks moments of contrast—sweet against bitter, light against shadow—to keep the nose engaged and the story alive.
