The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Florian Gallo designed Santal Attraction for the Je Le Veux collection, Mauboussin's offering that speaks to wanting and longing. Fig is a notoriously difficult note to work with, it can swing green and sharp, or tip into dried-fruit sweetness, and many fragrances struggle to find a coherent path through it. Here, the approach was to give fig a foundation that could contain its natural volatility without suppressing it entirely. Sandalwood serves as the primary supporting element, its creamy, woody character providing a soft landing pad for the lactonic fig note. The combination creates something that feels warmer than a typical fig fragrance, with a milky, intimate quality that develops as the initial brightness settles.
The opening of Santal Attraction features a lactonic quality that distinguishes it from more conventional fig fragrances. The fig here isn't simply fruity, it carries a milk-adjacent warmth that evokes ripe fig skin and the creamy interior of the fruit. This lactonic character gives the fragrance a distinctive richness that sets it apart from interpretations that emphasize green stems or dried-fruit sweetness. The perfumer's choice of sandalwood as the base material supports this warm register, allowing the creamy fig note to remain present rather than fading quickly into the background.
The evolution
The first minutes of Santal Attraction present fig in a characteristic form: green, crunchy, lactonic, with the unmistakable freshness of fruit breaking open. Jasmine arrives as the composition develops, adding a white floral softness that tempers the initial green edges without displacing the fig entirely. The sandalwood begins building underneath as the top notes evolve, providing a creamy foundation that becomes more pronounced over time. In the drydown, the sandalwood takes on a more dominant role, offering a warm, enveloping quality rather than anything sharp or austere. The lactonic fig note leaves its imprint on the woodsy base, coloring the sandalwood with a subtle softness that keeps the overall impression intimate and close. On fabric, the woody and lactonic elements persist well beyond the initial fruit phase.
Cultural impact
Mauboussin, established as a Parisian jeweler, entered the fragrance market with a distinct perspective on scent. Santal Attraction arrived as part of the Je Le Veux collection, a curated line of fragrances designed to offer distinct, statement-making options. The timing of the release placed it within a period when fig-forward fragrances were gaining renewed interest among consumers. This positioning allowed the fragrance to offer an alternative to the bright, green fig interpretations that had characterized much of the previous decade's offerings.
