The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Byredo launched Sundazed in 2019, continuing a collaboration with Jerome Epinette that began with the house's founding. Ben Gorham built Byredo on the idea that fragrance is memory distilled into liquid form, each scent a chapter in his personal narrative of bicultural identity. Sundazed continues that tradition, translating the feeling of a specific season into olfactory form rather than relying on narrative or mythology. Epinette's role has been consistent: to take abstract emotional concepts and render them in precise chemical language.
The note structure reflects a deliberate choice: citrus for brightness, white florals for warmth, and White Musk for clean modernity. These are not accident notes but a philosophical statement about what summer smells like when stripped of artifice. The pairing of lemon with mandarin creates a citrus that is both sharp and sweet, while neroli and jasmine add the floral depth without complexity. White Musk serves as the connective tissue, keeping everything in the same register of clean, easy, and present. Sundazed is not trying to be profound. It is trying to be exactly what it is: a map of a season.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the sharp clarity of Californian Lemon and Mandarin Orange, a burst of morning light that announces the season's arrival. As the citrus softens, Neroli and Jasmine emerge to create the heart: white florals that feel warm and enveloping rather than heady or indolic. The transition happens naturally, the florals blending into the citrus rather than replacing it. In the drydown, White Musk takes over, offering a clean, modern finish that echoes the freshness of the opening while grounding the composition in something intimate and skin-close.
Cultural impact
Byredo released Sundazed in 2019 as part of a broader collection that includes both signature and seasonal fragrances. It appeals to those seeking something that bridges clean and sweet, offering a scent profile that combines bright citrus with white florals and unexpected cotton candy sweetness. The fragrance's clean-but-sweet character has made it a frequent comparison point for anyone navigating the territory between restraint and playfulness.
