The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Byredo, the Stockholm fragrance house founded by Ben Gorham in 2006, approaches fragrance as an act of distillation, transforming memory and emotion into scent. Rather than adhering to ornate European perfume traditions, Byredo strips fragrance to its raw materials, allowing each element to speak with clarity. Alto Astral, composed by Jérôme Epinette, continues this philosophy by rejecting conventional sweetness in favor of contrasting textures: the bright aquatic quality of coconut water against aldehydic luminosity, then the resinous depth of frankincense against the intimacy of musk.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: coconut water and aldehydes create an opening that is simultaneously fresh and elevated, avoiding the predictable route of citrus or aquatic notes. Jasmine, musk, and frankincense in the heart establish a florality that is grounded rather than delicate, with frankincense providing an unexpected spiritual dimension. The drydown prioritizes tactile warmth over projection, cashmere wood and sandalwood creating a sensory experience closer to fabric against skin than to scent filling a room. This is fragrance as intimate encounter rather than statement.
The evolution
The opening arrives as a paradox: aldehydes suggest something classic and elevated, while coconut water anchors the composition in something unexpectedly casual and refreshing. This initial tension dissolves as jasmine takes prominence, offering a floral richness that feels neither precious nor restrained, buoyed by the soft presence of musk. The inclusion of frankincense at this stage provides an unexpected twist, a faintly spiritual resinous note that elevates the heart without overwhelming it. By the drydown, the composition has fully transformed, cashmere wood and amber creating a warm envelope that sandalwood extends and deepens. The fragrance evolves from airy brightness to a grounded, tactile warmth that lingers on skin and fabric.
Cultural impact
Alto Astral brought Brazilian energy to the niche fragrance world. The aldehyde-coconut combination was fresh when it arrived, and it still feels modern. Byredo positioned the fragrance as a sensory portrait of collective exuberance, connecting to themes of joy and cultural vitality. Scandinavian minimalism meets Rio's vibrant spirit in a composition that balances bright effervescence with warm, grounded depth. It's a scent that captures the warmth and ease of sun-soaked evenings by the sea.
