The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Frank Voelkl designed Bois in 2018 with a specific question: what if woods were less about strength and more about support? He wanted to expose their elegant, smooth side, wood that holds and embraces rather than asserts. The warm spice of angelica opens the composition with an aromatic freshness that feels contemporary, even as the woody-floral structure settles into something classically grounded. This is what Bois was built to do: reveal wood as a material that welcomes rather than overwhelms.
The heart, freesia, jasmine, orchid, takes the composition in an unexpected direction. White florals tend toward the powdery and delicate, qualities that shift the scent away from the expected and toward something unexpectedly soft. The orchid especially adds a delicate, almost waxy quality that contrasts with the cedar and sandalwood beneath it. Vanilla does the quiet work of bridging the florals to the wood, adding warmth and a touch of sweetness that keeps the whole structure coherent rather than fractured.
The evolution
The angelica opens bright, tinged with pink pepper. That initial spice is clean, aromatic, not sharp, but definitely present. It lasts maybe thirty minutes before the florals begin their slow rise. Freesia and jasmine arrive quietly, with orchid adding a powdery undertone that changes the temperature. The composition goes from sharp-warm to soft-warm. The florals don't overtake the cedar, they infiltrate it, softening its edges. The drydown is where Bois earns its name. Sandalwood and cedar merge, but vanilla keeps everything creamy. The florals fade to memory. What remains is warm, intimate, close to the skin. One application lasts through a full workday.
Cultural impact
Bois occupies a distinctive space within Commodity's collection: wood reimagined as something supportive rather than assertive. The fragrance's moderate sillage means it stays close to the skin, present without announcing itself. For wearers who want presence without projection, this is the appeal. One application holds a six-to-eight hour arc on most skin. The longevity is practical for daily wear, particularly in professional settings where restraint matters.
