The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vento nel Vento, wind within wind, arrived in 2013 as part of Bois 1920's Limited Art Collection, a series of 1,920 numbered bottles meant to honor the Galardi family's legacy and the customers who had followed the house through its Florentine history. The concept behind the fragrance is rooted in contradiction: something ephemeral made permanent. Wind cannot be held, yet here it was, captured in a bottle. The fragrance moves in layers, shifting from fresh to resinous to warm, never settling into one state. Each of the 1,920 bottles carries this contradiction: fleeting by nature, numbered and certified.
What makes Vento nel Vento unusual is the heart. Black licorice, not a common centerpiece in Western perfumery, sits between the bright opening and the smoky base like a middle voice in a conversation. It anchors the entire middle phase, supported by white musk that keeps it from becoming medicinal. The combination of incense and licorice creates a dry, almost tart quality that separates this from more straightforward amber-oriental compositions. The white musk acts as a counterweight, lending a soft, clean undertone that prevents the anise from overwhelming the composition.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and clean, elemi resin cuts through pink pepper like a cold draft in a warm room. The citrus and spice combination creates an immediate sense of clarity, a sharp entrance that announces the fragrance without overwhelming. Thirty minutes in, the peony blooms, something rounder, almost overripe, as if the petals have been sitting in sunlight rather than freshly cut. The black licorice arrives quietly, then builds, anise and smoke intertwining as the florals recede. There's a natural progression here, a sense of the fragrance unfolding rather than jumping between notes. By hour two, frankincense has fully committed, and the composition enters its darker phase, the smoke becoming more pronounced, the resinous qualities emerging with greater authority. The drydown brings labdanum and benzoin together in a smoky amber that lingers on cool skin, warm and intimate.
Cultural impact
The Limited Art Collection positions each fragrance as a numbered, certified object, 1,920 pieces of 100 ml each, tying the brand's numeric identity to the exclusivity of the release. The collection reflects a broader philosophy within niche perfumery that prizes craft and rarity over mass availability. Vento nel Vento stands out within this collection for its unusual heart structure and its commitment to smoky-resinous character, a profile that rewards close attention rather than making an immediate impression.
