The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Banana Republic launched Metal Rain in 2020. The name evokes that precise moment when rain begins to fall and the air turns cool, charged, and metallic. The fragrance captures the electricity of weather in transit, not a sunny day, not a storm in full rage, but the threshold between the two. Ozonic notes and green tea bring that post-rain clarity in the opening, while cashmere wood and sandalwood provide a soft, warm counterweight that balances the coolness. The galbanum and basil add a green, almost herbal bite that keeps the citrus from going flat, giving the first moments an edge. As the scent settles, the woody base becomes more apparent, the cashmere wood softening into something skin-close and intimate while the sandalwood adds creamy depth.
The key to Metal Rain's character is the tension between cool and warm. Ozonic notes and green tea bring that post-rain clarity, while cashmere wood and sandalwood provide a soft, warm counterweight. The galbanum and basil in the top add a green, almost herbal bite that keeps the citrus from going flat, giving the opening an edge. The green tea note provides a vegetal, slightly bitter quality that grounds the ozonic elements, preventing them from becoming too ethereal.
The evolution
The first spray hits with a sharp, almost metallic brightness. Lemon and blackcurrant arrive crisp, violet leaf and basil following immediately with a green, slightly medicinal cool. It's the opening that earns the name, that moment of static electricity before the sky breaks. Around the 15-minute mark, the citrus softens and ozonic notes take over, blending with green tea and lavender into something cooler, quieter, almost watery. The charge dissipates into stillness. The drydown is where the fragrance becomes gentle. Cashmere wood and sandalwood arrive softly, warming the composition without overpowering it. Musk and orcanox linger close to the skin, intimate and powdery. On fabric, the scent holds into the next day, a faint, clean warmth that's less a fragrance than a memory of one.
Cultural impact
Metal Rain presents a fresh fragrance profile that leans green-ozonic with a distinctive metallic edge. The ozonic elements create a crisp, atmospheric quality that evokes cool air after rainfall, while green tea and herbal notes add complexity beyond typical aquatic compositions. The woody base, combining cashmere wood and sandalwood, provides warmth that prevents the scent from feeling too stark or one-dimensional. This balance of atmospheric freshness and cozy depth makes it a versatile option for daily wear, suitable for contexts where a subtle, confident presence is preferred over something more assertively projected.
