The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tuberose Overdose arrived in 2022 from perfumer Christelle Laprade, and the name itself is the concept: not a whisper of tuberose, but an amplification. Laprade built this around tropical white florals, leaning into what tuberose does best, creamy, slightly animalic, heady. The composition centers on white florals that arrive in unison rather than sequentially, with jasmine sambac lifting everything into tropical territory. Peony and frangipani fill the heart, creating a rich floral density that feels lush and generous. The overall impression is one of unapologetic richness, the kind of fragrance that doesn't ask permission to be noticed. Vanilla and praline arrive in the base to soften the florals, sandalwood adding warmth that keeps the experience grounded rather than soaring.
What makes the structure interesting is how the overdose is contained. The top layer, blackcurrant, green apple, ginger, delivers sweetness and spice that could read as confectionery, but the heart deploys five white florals simultaneously. Tuberose doesn't just lead; it shares space with jasmine sambac, tiare, frangipani, and peony. The overload is deliberate. Then the base extends everything: ambrocenide, a synthetic ambergris note, adds animalic lift that keeps the florals from settling into something merely sweet. The drydown isn't a retreat, it's the florals finding a second wind.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Blackcurrant and green apple, with ginger warmth pushing through. There is something here that reviewers compare to Haribo gummies, sweet, but with a green edge that keeps it interesting. Within minutes, the tuberose takes over. The white florals do not wait politely in line, they arrive as a bloc, creamy and indolic, the jasmine sambac giving everything a tropical lift. Peony and frangipani round out the heart into something almost too much, until the base arrives. Vanilla and praline soften the florals sharper edges, sandalwood adding warmth. The Ambrocenide lingers closest to the skin, providing an animalic lift that stays with you long after the initial burst fades. The overdose does not disappear, it settles into something more intimate as hours pass, the fruity sweetness giving way to a creamy floral presence that lingers near the skin.
Cultural impact
Tuberose Overdose stands as the most assertive fragrance in Banana Republic lineup, pushing beyond what the house typically offers. Community discussion centers on its intensity: some find the opening overwhelming, others discover a drydown that rewards the initial impact. Comparisons to Bvlgari Splendida Tuberose and Tocca Florence suggest it fills a similar niche, bold white floral with gourmand warmth, while comparison notes often highlight the ginger spiced opening and the sustained animalic presence of ambrocenide.
