The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Part of Banana Republic's Icon Collection, Cypress Cedar arrived in 2018 alongside Linen Vetiver and Neroli Woods as the sophomore trio in a fragrance line built around accessible woody-citrus compositions. Cypress Cedar sits at the heart of this collection, leaning into conifer materials that feel grounded and aromatic. What emerged was a scent built on contrast, bright citrus opening against a deep conifer base, with rhubarb adding an unexpected tartness that kept the heart from feeling predictable. The woody character stays present throughout, holding the composition together without tipping into heaviness. It's a fragrance that manages to feel both structured and effortless, the kind of scent that works as a daily anchor without demanding attention.
The rhubarb in the heart is the quiet surprise. Most fragrances that lean woody and aromatic go straight for amber or spice to warm the center. This one uses rhubarb's tart, almost green vegetable quality to bridge the citrus opening and the conifer base. It doesn't sweeten, it sharpens. The result is a heart that feels crisp even as the cedar settles in. The pairing of cypress and cedar in the base is also notable: both are conifer materials, but they don't read as redundant. Cypress brings a lighter, more resinous quality, while cedarwood provides the deeper, drier woody structure.
The evolution
The opening is the sharpest part of the experience. Bitter orange and pink pepper arrive fast, with mint cooling the air as the scent develops. The citrus reads more like zest than juice, slightly medicinal in the best way. As the mint recedes, the cedar enters the heart and takes over as the dominant material. The rhubarb keeps things tart and green through the mid-drydown, preventing the cedar from becoming sweet or heavy. As the brightest materials fade, cypress and vetiver take over, and the scent settles into something quieter. Moss and patchouli emerge in the late drydown, adding earthiness and a subtle warmth that prevents the whole thing from going too austere. Musk arrives last, just a suggestion of skin-warmth underneath everything else. The longevity is satisfying, with a full arc that rewards wearing throughout the day.
Cultural impact
Cypress Cedar occupies a specific niche: woody-citrus fragrances at an accessible price point that consistently deliver. The scent performs like something costing significantly more, with a composition that balances tartness, brightness, and earthiness across its development. The longevity and sillage make it a reliable daily wear rather than a statement piece. It's the fragrance someone reaches for when they want to smell good without thinking about it, a quiet confidence that works across the day.
