The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Balenciaga's first perfume was Le Dix, launched in 1947. The 2025 version is a reverential reconstruction, the house returned to its archives and rebuilt the original using modern extraction techniques while honoring the spirit of the 1947 formula. Named after the Maison's address at 10 Avenue George V in Paris, Le Dix is an olfactory time capsule that bridges the house's origins with the present. The perfumer worked from Balenciaga's historical brief, creating a composition that speaks both forward and back.
The aldehydes here don't behave like aldehydes in a classic Chanel, they're isolated iris aldehydes, precise molecules that heighten the powdery effect without amplifying it into something shouty. The iris aldehydes give the iris a transparent quality that feels modern. Orris absolute brings its own violet-like character to the iris, and together they create something more refined than standard iris fragrances. Violet leaf absolute adds a green, ozonic freshness that cuts the warmth. Frankincense and incense essential oils ground the base, aromatic materials that tie the composition together with a quiet, contemplative depth that suits the house's architectural language.
The evolution
The opening hits cool and bright. Aldehydes lift the iris into something almost champagne-like, but the powder keeps it grounded. Violet leaf adds a crisp, green lift, almost aquatic, like the smell of morning rain on stone. Frankincense whispers underneath, barely there. Within the first hour, the aldehydes soften. The iris deepens into something waxy, almost carroty, orris root asserting itself. Violet leaf retreats, letting the floral heart become creamier, more refined. By the second hour, the composition settles into its true character. The iris and orris blend into a single powdery, waxy note. Aldehydes fade to a warm, buttery hum. The base takes over, frankincense and incense become the foreground, with the iris settling beneath as a warm, powdery foundation. This is where it lives for the next several hours. Close. Intimate. Lasting.
Cultural impact
Le Dix (2025) joins a wave of heritage revivals, reimagining a 1947 icon for contemporary noses. The use of iris aldehydes, isolated molecules that refine rather than amplify, positions this as a bridge between vintage powder traditions and modern sensibilities. It's finding an audience among those who want classic elegance without smelling dated.
