The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Núria Cruelles Borrull, Loewe's in-house perfumer, built Iris Root around the hidden beauty of the iris rhizome. The 2025 release belongs to Loewe's Crafted Collection, a program devoted to artisanal presentation and architectural bottles. But this fragrance is about the material first. Cruelles wanted to capture not just the iris smell, but the tension between its cool elegance and the unexpected vibrancy buried in the root. The result is a study in contrast, powder and spark, earth and light. The cool iris opens with a powdery softness that feels almost translucent, like morning light filtered through silk. There's a quiet richness underneath, a creaminess that doesn't announce itself but lingers at the edge of perception, giving the fragrance its distinctive weight.
What makes this composition unusual is how the cool, powdery iris is elevated rather than softened by the Timur pepper. Timut is a variety of Nepalese Sichuan pepper, known for its citrusy, grapefruit-like brightness, a sharp counterpoint to the creamy root. The Angelica seed then grounds the top in a soft herbality, preventing the whole thing from feeling too delicate. The heart is pure orris root, layered so the powdery violet character deepens rather than fades. It's a composition built around restraint and texture, not power.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with a green sweetness from the Angelica, soft and herbaceous, before the Timur pepper introduces its sparkling citrus lift. The contrast is immediate, creamy root meets bright pepper, neither dominating. On skin, the transition is gentle rather than dramatic. The powdery orris character settles in, and reviewers describe it as linear but harmonious, the kind of fragrance that holds its shape without surprising you. The iris stays front and center throughout, carrying the wear with cool violet facets that one reviewer compared to cold stale lipstick, an observation that's more accurate than unflattering. As the brighter top notes recede, the earthy root quality deepens. The drydown is quiet and close, a whisper of creamy iris and warm earth that lingers softly on the skin.
Cultural impact
Iris Root arrived in 2025 as part of Loewe's Crafted Collection, a program built around artisanal presentation and architectural bottles, but rooted in material integrity over marketing drama. The fragrance sits in a quieter corner of the portfolio, appealing to those who want a fragrance to whisper rather than project. The scent itself embodies restraint as an aesthetic choice, not a limitation. It's a composition that speaks to wearers who understand that sophistication often arrives quietly, without needing to fill the room.
