The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Selective VI arrived in 2016 with a composition that balances bright and warm qualities. Shaya reached for citrus, apple, and orange at the top, creating an immediate burst of freshness that feels clean and inviting. The citrus opens sharp and bright, while the apple adds a subtle green sweetness that prevents the orange from becoming too sharp. As the top notes begin to settle, they merge seamlessly into the heart. The base builds slowly, grounded in vanilla and white musk that add warmth and softness. Vanilla brings a creamy, slightly sweet depth that balances the initial brightness, while white musk adds a clean, airy quality that extends the wear. The result is a fragrance that reads as both fresh and warm, two qualities that rarely coexist without one overwhelming the other.
The mint-sea salt pairing in the heart is what elevates this beyond a straightforward citrus fragrance. Mint provides a cooling effect that prevents the vanilla from becoming cloying, adding a crisp, almost mentholated quality that keeps the composition feeling light. Sea salt adds a mineral edge that grounds the sweetness in something tangible, like salted caramel, but with a maritime breeze instead of butter.
The evolution
The opening announces citrus and green apple with immediate brightness, sharp, clean, and awake. Within minutes, the mint arrives and the temperature drops. The sea salt follows, pulling the composition toward something mineral and cool. By the heart phase, the fragrance has shifted entirely. The citrus brightness that opened the composition gives way to a minty marine quality, though a sweet undercurrent remains present throughout. The drydown is where vanilla takes over, softened by amber and white musk. Here the mint lingers longest, a ghost of the opening, folded into the base now. The vanilla and white musk blend together, creating a warm, soft foundation that extends the wear. The mint continues to provide a subtle coolness that threads through the warm base, keeping the composition from becoming too heavy.
Cultural impact
Selective VI opened with citrus and green apple, ingredients that communicate quickly and clearly. The mint-sea salt heart added an unexpected coolness that distinguishes it from simpler citrus compositions. The green apple brings a crisp, slightly tart quality that pairs naturally with the brightness of citrus, while the mint adds a fresh, almost chilling effect. Sea salt introduces a mineral dimension that grounds the sweetness, creating contrast that keeps the composition from feeling flat. The vanilla base softens the entire experience, adding warmth that balances the cool mint and bright citrus.
