The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Closer came from Atelier Oblique in 2017, composed by Karine Vinchon-Spehner. The brief: proximity. Not loud. Not distant. Close. Fig's lactonic quality brings a sticky-sweet creaminess to the opening, an immediacy that reads as closeness. The fruit note carries a certain richness that allows the composition to feel intimate rather than projecting. The sweetness here isn't incidental, it serves the central idea, creating a presence that stays near rather than reaching out. This is a fragrance built around the space between wearer's skin and the world, asking only that you lean in.
Fig provides a creamy, sticky-sweet character in the opening that anchors the composition. Its lactonic quality gives the fragrance an immediate, intimate feel. As the top notes evolve, leather emerges from beneath the surface, present all along but now becoming more apparent. The transition isn't abrupt, it's a gradual unfolding. Vetiver brings an earthy, smoky character that adds depth and warmth to the drydown. The overall impression is one of subtle layering, with notes that complement rather than compete, creating a fragrance that rewards attention.
The evolution
The opening brings fig's lactonic sweetness together with blackcurrant's tart depth and bright citrus notes. There's a sticky-sweet quality that feels immediate and present. As the fragrance develops, rose and violet arrive to soften the sweetness while leather begins to surface beneath. The heart of the composition reveals itself through this interplay, the fruity elements finding balance with the emerging leather. The base settles into leather and oud together, with vetiver adding earthy, slightly smoky depth. The overall trajectory moves from bright and creamy toward something darker and more grounded. The drydown offers warmth and presence, a lasting impression that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Closer is limited to 500 pieces, maintaining an exclusive presence rather than chasing broad availability. The fragrance pairs fruity freshness with leather-oud darkness, creating a duality that sets it apart. This combination offers something for those seeking complexity beyond straightforward compositions, a fragrance that works in layers rather than a single register.
