The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Artist'o, an Italian house founded in 2025 by visual artist Ruth Chao von Gehren, treats each fragrance as a visual‑art statement, pairing scent with memory and feeling. For its inaugural Alora collection, the house invited independent perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer to translate a vivid brief into a wearable work of art. The brief called for a bright opening of dark chocolate and orange, a warm heart of tobacco and whiskey, and a grounding drydown built on woody notes. Feisthauer used these materials like pigments, layering dark cocoa with citrus brightness, adding smoky tobacco brushed with boozy warmth, and finishing with a clean cedar‑sandalwood base. The Alora collection explores the intersection of art and scent, seeking to evoke emotional resonance through carefully selected accords.
Feisthauer sees each note in Am'e as a pigment on a canvas, applying dark chocolate as a deep base tone, orange as a vivid highlight, tobacco as a smoky mid‑tone, whiskey as a translucent glaze, and woody notes as the final varnish. By sequencing these elements from top to base, the composition maintains contrast and continuity, allowing moments of brightness to interact with moments of depth. The woody base acts as a stabilizer, preventing the heavier chocolate and tobacco from overwhelming the wearer while preserving a subtle trail. This layered approach mirrors the visual artist's practice of building form, texture, and light, resulting in a fragrance that reads as a living artwork on the skin.
The evolution
Am'e begins its aromatic tale with a burst of dark chocolate that meets fresh orange, a duo that instantly delivers a sweet‑bitter spark. The orange zest cuts through the chocolate's richness, giving the opening a bright, citrus lift that lasts for several minutes. As time passes the orange fades and the dark chocolate deepens, preparing the stage for a heart built around tobacco and whiskey. Tobacco brings a smoky, leathery quality that adds a rugged depth, while the whiskey adds a warm, boozy amber note that amplifies the spice and creates a comforting, Intimate feel. This heart remains the dominant presence for an hour or more, offering a rich, spiced warmth that draws the wearer in. After the heart peaks, the composition transitions to a drydown anchored by woody notes. Cedar and sandalwood provide a smooth, rounded base that wraps the earlier chocolate, orange, tobacco and whiskey in a quiet forest finish, extending the scent's life well beyond three hours.
Cultural impact
Am'e by Artist'o taps into a cultural nostalgia for classic gourmand fragrances while modernizing the experience with a bold dark chocolate core. The inclusion of dried orange adds a citrus twist that resonates with contemporary tastes seeking depth and contrast. This blend reflects a shift toward indulgent yet sophisticated profiles, appealing to consumers who value both comfort and intrigue. Its reception highlights a growing appreciation for nuanced gourmand notes in everyday wear, influencing upcoming releases to explore similar sweet‑spicy balances.
