The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Arquiste approached the creation of Misfit with a focus on patchouli, a material that carries weight and history in perfumery. The brand worked with Rodrigo Flores-Roux to translate this material into a fragrance that could stand apart from conventional patchouli compositions. The result is a scent that uses the note as a central element rather than a supporting player, exploring what patchouli can offer when treated with intention and care. The composition draws on the richness of the material while finding balance through complementary elements, creating something that speaks to patchouli's enduring appeal without repeating familiar formulas. Rodrigo Flores-Roux brought his experience to the project, working to ensure the final fragrance honors the material's complexity.
Misfit's composition centers on an earthy patchouli that anchors the fragrance throughout its development. The Akigalawood in the heart introduces a spiced wood quality that adds dimension without overwhelming, preventing any heaviness that patchouli alone might bring. The ambrette seed absolute contributes a refined musk character that gives the scent its distinctive close-to-skin quality. The overall effect is a fragrance that feels resolved from the start, with the various elements working together rather than competing for attention.
The evolution
The opening of Misfit presents a bright, tart quality from the bergamot, which intertwines with the herbal notes of carrot seed and angelica root to create a clean, inviting first impression. As the fragrance develops, the spice of Akigalawood emerges alongside the Bulgarian rose, which in this composition reads as warm and slightly honeyed rather than distinctly floral. The patchouli then becomes more apparent, supported by the tolu balsam and tonka bean, and the scent settles into a soft, warm register that feels like cashmere against the skin. The drydown offers a close, resinous warmth that lingers for hours, staying within an intimate range rather than projecting aggressively outward. The fragrance maintains its presence into the later stages, softening gradually but remaining detectable.
Cultural impact
Misfit received recognition when it won the Fragrance Foundation's Fragrance of the Year, Indie award in 2021. This accolade brought increased attention to the brand's approach to patchouli, highlighting the fragrance within the broader context of niche perfumery. The award positioned the scent as notable within a category that values distinctive material choices and unconventional interpretations. Misfit has found an audience among those who appreciate patchouli handled with restraint and sophistication, offering a counterpoint to moreassertive expressions of the note.
