The beginning
Ropion built Aphorismes around a single idea: each fragrance is an aphorism, a concise statement that provokes reflection. Encens Insensé translates that philosophy directly. Insensé means unreasonable, mad, beyond sense. The brief was clear from the name. Ropion wanted an incense that didn't behave like incense. Something that questioned its own category before the first note landed. The 2024 launch gave him a laboratory and full creative control, two things a Master Perfeter rarely gets in a commercial setting. Encens Insensé is what he did with that freedom.
The composition holds a deliberate contradiction at its center: aquatic freshness meets frankincense. These shouldn't coexist easily. Water and smoke, freshness and resin, Ropion threads them together by way of Turkish rose and violet. The rose doesn't bloom softly here. It strikes. Violet dusts the heart with powdery precision while aquatic notes keep the florals lifted, almost ozonic. The frankincense arrives late, anchoring everything that came before into something warm and close. The structure rewards patience. Every layer earns its place.
The evolution
The opening arrives with an aldehydic burst, ginger and pink pepper sparking clean heat. Juniper berries cut cold, medicinal, the kind of opening that announces itself without apology. Ten minutes in, the aquatic accord moves in to soften everything. Not a gentle transition. A negotiation. The Turkish rose doesn't bloom gradually. It strikes. Dust it with violet, evolve within an ozonic haze, this is where the contradiction lives. The aldehydic sparkle gives the ginger and pink pepper a shimmering quality, almost effervescent, while the juniper berries anchor the composition with their crisp, evergreen sharpness. As the aquatic notes arrive, they introduce a cool, watery shimmer that tempers the initial intensity, creating a subtle coolness that feels carefully calibrated rather than accidental.
