The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mantra by Anjali Perfumes was created by self-taught perfumer Anjali Vandemark, whose Bainbridge Island studio sits at the intersection of her Indian heritage and Pacific Northwest upbringing. Vandemark drew from her fascination with mystic rituals, naming the scent after the Sanskrit word for a spell. Her goal was to capture that sense of enchantment through scent, using dark chocolate as a seductive anchor and bay as an aromatic highlight.
The note selection reflects Vandemark's approach to balance. Dark chocolate provides an unconventional opening material that brings both sweetness and depth, while West Indian Bay offers aromatic complexity that prevents the scent from becoming purely gourmand. The violet and caramel heart softens the richness while keeping the composition grounded in warmth. Finally, vanilla and amber create a familiar, comforting drydown that extends the wear without overwhelming.
The evolution
Mantra begins with the bright, spicy character of West Indian Bay tempered by rich dark chocolate. The bay provides an aromatic opening that gradually gives way to the heart, where violet adds its characteristic powdery softness. Caramel then introduces a warm, edible sweetness that bridges the transition to the drydown. Vanilla and amber complete the arc, their warm, resinous qualities wrapping the earlier notes in a soft, lingering finish.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Mantra has sparked conversation for its daring blend of chocolate and violet. Reviewers note the fragrance feels like a veil that lets violet shine through a cocoa‑sweet haze, while the aromatic bay leaf adds an unexpected spice. Wearers often describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room with quiet confidence, making it a favorite for those who appreciate a gourmand twist on a floral core.
