The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Splendid Orange Blossom arrived in 2020 as part of Angel Schlesser's Les Eaux d'un Instant collection. The name says what it is. No metaphor, no poetic deflection. Julien Plos built the composition around Tunisian bitter orange, letting it lead the top before the heart of orange blossom carries the weight. The base of patchouli and vanilla keeps it from floating away entirely. It's a straightforward proposition: what happens when you take orange blossom seriously and give it something to stand on? The opening burst is immediate and confident, the transition to the floral heart feels natural rather than forced, and the dry down provides the kind of quiet warmth that makes you want to revisit the scent long after the initial spray.
The combination of orange blossom with patchouli and vanilla is deceptively simple. Orange blossom on its own can skew soapy or overly indolic depending on concentration. Patchouli grounds it with earth and a slight bitterness that most floral compositions avoid. Vanilla then softens the handoff without sweetening the deal. Plos structured the pyramid so each layer does real work, the citrus opens, the floral owns the middle, the base keeps it honest. It's the kind of composition that earns respect by not trying to impress.
The evolution
Bitter orange and bergamot hit first with a clean, almost sparkling brightness. The bergamot especially keeps it from reading as just citrus, there's a coolness to the opening that feels intentional. The orange blossom takes its time arriving, never rushing. The floral heart arrives at its own pace, creamy without being heavy, grounded by a faint green thread that keeps it from floating off into abstraction. The base settles slowly, the patchouli dry and earthy, the vanilla warm and close to skin. As the hours pass, the fragrance evolves on the skin, shifting from that bright citrus opening through the lush floral middle and eventually into this quiet, intimate territory where the vanilla and patchouli create a soft, skin-like warmth.
Cultural impact
Splendid Orange Blossom occupies an interesting middle ground in the world of orange blossom fragrances. The patchouli and vanilla base gives it enough weight to feel complete rather than sketched, substantial rather than wispy. Unlike lighter interpretations that can veer into soap or air freshener territory, this one holds its own as a proper perfume. The combination of earthy patchouli with warm vanilla creates something that reads as more considered than a simple floral water, giving the orange blossom somewhere solid to exist rather than leaving it to float away into abstraction.
