The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Floral Memento arrived as part of And Other Stories' expansion into personal fragrance. The brand had been building a portfolio of body mists and perfume oils, compositions meant to sit alongside a wardrobe rather than compete for attention. Jérôme Epinette composed this one with a specific intention, less an olfactive crowd-pleaser than a keepsake. A memento, after all, is something you hold onto, not something that announces itself. The name itself sets the expectation: this is a fragrance designed to linger in memory, to be reached for again. There's no grand gesture in the composition, only the kind of quiet specificity that suggests the perfumer was thinking about who would actually wear it.
The composition does something quietly clever: it leads with fruit, specifically the kind of slightly tart blackberry that suggests something just picked. Then it pivots into powder, where the violet and lavender heart is doing the sentimental work, the part that makes this less a body mist and more a small, felt experience. Mate in the base keeps it grounded where it could have tipped into sugar. The fruit doesn't shout, it murmurs, more suggestion than statement. The violet carries a particular weight here, sweet but with that faint mineral edge that keeps it from reading as confection.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are the brightest: lemon and bergamot cut through, and the blackberry reads almost like the rind of something just broken open. There's a clean, green-cold quality in these opening moments. By the half-hour mark the peony and violet settle in properly, and the scent softens into something more private. The lavender keeps it from going saccharine, keeps a herbal spine under all that powder. Two hours in, the cedar and musk take over, and the mate emerges in the background, a dry whisper that grounds everything without dominating. On fabric the violet powder can linger past six hours, close to skin, almost imperceptible to anyone but the wearer. On skin itself it's a quieter affair, the citrus fades first, and you're left with a warm, soapy trace by late afternoon.
Cultural impact
Floral Memento fits squarely into And Other Stories' literary register, less a statement scent than a personal one. It reads as the fragrance equivalent of a favorite cardigan: worn often, not discussed much, missed when it's not there. The body mist format keeps it in casual territory, a daytime, close-to-skin kind of composition rather than something built for entrance. The powdery-floral heart gives it a softness that feels nostalgic without tipping into dated territory. The blackberry opening adds just enough edge to prevent the overall impression from becoming too gentle.
