Why it exists.
The beginning
Bertrand Duchaufour built this one around a single fruit, the mandarin, and let everything else orbit it like a quiet constellation. Alûstre released Spectre 565 in 2023 as part of their numbered series. The naming says it all: 248, the catalogue position. Ode to the Mandarin, the intention. The composition does what the title promises. It doesn't decorate the citrus with sweetness or bury it under wood. It builds a world around the fruit where the peel, the pith, the leaves of an imagined tree all exist at once, sharp, green, and almost edible. The opening cracks bright with aldehydes, then settles into the herbal register. Mandarin arrives in multiple voices: green tangerine, regular mandarin, even a yuzu nod. Each one stripped of candied excess, presented instead as raw zest.
What makes this composition unusual is its refusal to soften the citrus. Spectre 565 goes the other direction. Aldehydes sharpen the opening into something almost metallic, while tomato leaf, red thyme, and bay bring a raw, savory green that pushes the citrus toward the savory end of the spectrum. The base adds sandalwood and myrrh for warmth, but the overall effect stays herbal, aromatic, and slightly austere. You don't get the usual gourmand cushion here. There's no vanilla drape, no amber smoothing.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud. Aldehydes, yuzu, sweet orange, all the bright top notes detonating at once, with that clean, almost effervescent lift that aldehydes give. Then the herbs arrive in full. Tomato leaf and red thyme take over, and the citrus retreats to a supporting role, more like zest than fruit. The middle phase is the heart of the fragrance: pine and cypress add a dry, resinous backbone, fennel brings an unexpected sweetness, and the whole thing smells like walking through a garden after rain. The texture shifts constantly here. One moment it's green and sappy, the next it's dry and almost charred from the thyme. Around the three-hour mark, the sandalwood and cedarwood start to surface, joined by myrrh and a quiet patchouli. The final hours are woody and slightly powdery, with white musk holding everything close. The citrus is gone by then, but the herbal ghost lingers.
