The beginning
Spectre 747-500 Sensations of Crimson Echoes arrived in 2024 from Alûstre, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour. This one leans into the crimson, into fruit and flower, into the kind of composition that starts bright and lands somewhere warmer than you'd expect. It is a floral by classification, but the label undersells what the juice actually does. Alûstre built this around a fruit-spice opening that grabs attention and then turns toward magnolia, rose absolute, and palo santo in a way that moves the whole thing from candy toward something almost meditative by the end. The fragrance wears close to the skin in its early minutes, with the mandarin and black pepper creating a bright snap that quickly gives way to the softer fruit notes pooling beneath.
The interesting choice here is how many berries made the cut. Lychee and strawberry in the top, blueberry joining in the heart, a touch of mandarin for citrus lift. This one stacks them, which creates a layered jam quality without tipping into toothache territory because the pepper keeps things honest. Palo Santo is the surprise. It sits in the heart alongside the florals and gives the whole composition a slightly smoky, almost incense-like undertone that most berry-driven compositions tend to avoid entirely.
The evolution
The opening is loud. Mandarin and black pepper cut through, the lychee already pooling underneath. Strawberry lands as a jammy, slightly syrupy sweetness that fills the space quickly. Soon after, the fruit calms and the florals take over, magnolia and rose absolute expanding outward while the palo santo adds a faint woodsmoke haze, almost like someone lit a match across the room. The blueberry hides in here somewhere, woven into the petals rather than sitting on top of them. The transition into drydown happens gradually as the composition warms against skin. The florals thin, the ambergris and caramel settle in, and white musk pulls everything into a close, slightly powdery warmth that persists for hours without really changing much. The ambergris arrives as a soft, salty warmth that bridges the fruity heart and the musky base, lending an almost skin-like quality to the drydown.
