The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hany Hafez created Chic Magnet in 2018 with a single purpose: bring back what people couldn't stop asking for. Escada's Magnetism had been discontinued years earlier, and the inquiries never stopped. Rather than chase trends, Hafez went backward, reconstructing the warm, powdery, leathery character that made the original so sought after. Chic Magnet is the answer to that gap, built for anyone who remembers and anyone curious enough to discover what they missed.
The note structure is deliberate in its contrast. Tolu balsam and amber provide the powdery sweetness that anchors the entire composition, that soft, almost talc-like warmth that reads as nostalgic without feeling dated. Against it, leather brings structure and weight. The sandalwood doesn't soften the leather so much as warm it; the cedar doesn't sharpen it but dusts it. Saffron threads through from top to bottom, metallic and slightly bitter, keeping the sweetness honest. What could easily become cloying stays grounded, warm, yes, but never heavy. Sweet, yes, but never naive.
The evolution
Saffron opens bright and metallic, cutting through immediately. Within minutes the tolu balsam swells, that powdery sweetness arrives fast and announces itself. The leather doesn't rush. It takes its time arriving, and when it does, it doesn't dominate, it layers over the powder, adding depth without erasing the softness. The cedar shows up around the second hour, dry and dusty, a quiet reminder that this isn't just warmth for warmth's sake. By hour four, the composition has settled. The tolu balsam resurfaces, now blending with amber and musk into something close, powdery, and impossibly wearable. What stays longest? The amber-musk foundation, warm and intimate, still present the next morning on fabric.
Cultural impact
Chic Magnet found its audience in the gap between what people wanted and what they could no longer find. Escada's Magnetism had been discontinued, and the community of collectors hunting discontinued fragrances had nowhere to turn. Alexandria Fragrances built Chic Magnet as a direct answer, not a clone, but a reinterpretation for those who never got to experience the original and those who remember it fondly. The powdery-sweet Oriental character has particular resonance in niche fragrance communities where warm, sweet, and leathery compositions never went out of style. The 2018 release arrived at a moment when recreation of beloved discontinued fragrances became its own genre, and it found its audience immediately.
