    The Story of Sea Daffodil

A rare coastal bloom yielding one of perfumery's most elusive absolutes. Sea Daffodil captures the mineral freshness of windswept shores distilled into an intoxicating floral heart.

    Heritage

Pancratium maritimum has adorned Mediterranean shores since antiquity. The ancient Greeks associated this flower with coastal deities and used it in ceremonial wreaths. Greek physician Dioscorides documented its medicinal applications in the first century. The plant thrives where sea spray meets sand, from Portugal's Atlantic coast to Israel's Mediterranean shores. Ottoman-era perfumers combined it with orange blossom and jasmine in traditional attars. Today, cultivation remains limited, with most commercial harvest centered on Greece and southern Italy where sustainable wildcrafting practices protect natural populations. This scarcity has made Sea Daffodil absolute a marker of prestige in high-end compositions, appearing sparingly in niche fragrances that celebrate rare botanicals.

    Production

    How Sea Daffodil Is Made

Harvesting Sea Daffodil presents unique challenges. Workers must collect flowers at dawn from coastal sand dunes before the Mediterranean sun destroys their delicate aroma compounds. The absolute undergoes solvent extraction, typically using hexane, yielding a concentrated paste that requires alcohol washing to produce the final absolute. Each kilogram of concrete demands roughly 5,000 to 6,000 hand-picked blooms. The resulting material carries an extraordinary profile: marine-tinged florals layered with green, almost cucumber-like freshness and warm honeyed undertones. Perfumery houses use this ingredient sparingly, typically at 0.1 to 0.5% in fragrance concentrates, as it possesses remarkable diffusive power.
