The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mon Paris draws its name directly from the city that defined Yves Saint Laurent, Paris. The 2017 Star Edition arrives as a collector's bottle, a special iteration of the original Mon Paris flank. The Star Edition takes the Mon Paris DNA, red berries, datura, patchouli, and presents it in a flacon. The opening delivers tart, juicy berries with a citrus flash from bergamot that cuts through any sweetness before it can become heavy. The combination of datura and white musk creates a scent that feels simultaneously airy and grounded. The berries up top keep things bright and accessible, preventing the datura from becoming too singular in character. The patchouli in the base anchors the entire composition, adding earthy depth that balances the brighter top notes.
What makes the Mon Paris Star Edition composition unusual is the datura. In perfumery, datura sits in the solanaceae family alongside Brugmansia and other narcotic blooms. It's not commonly used, which makes it immediately distinctive. The combination of datura and white musk creates an effect that's simultaneously airy and grounded. The berries up top keep things bright and accessible, preventing the datura from going fully into hypnotic territory. Datura brings a slightly medicinal quality with a creamy undertone that adds complexity to the fruity opening.
The evolution
The opening delivers tart, juicy berries that feel bright and almost sparkling, as if someone just crushed fresh raspberries in a glass of cold water. The bergamot cuts through immediately, adding a citrus flash that keeps the sweetness from pooling. The berries are the star here, raspberry, strawberry, whatever specific red fruit the formulation uses. Then the transition happens. The berries don't disappear, they melt into the datura and jasmine. The white floral heart doesn't arrive softly. Datura has a particular quality, slightly medicinal, almost bitter, with a creamy undertone that adds an unexpected dimension to the fruity opening. The jasmine provides traditional creamy sweetness that balances the datura. By the time the fragrance settles, patchouli anchors everything with its earthy, grounded presence.
Cultural impact
Mon Paris Star Edition combines mainstream appeal with an unusual material. The composition brings together berries, jasmine, and sweetness alongside datura, creating a fragrance that offers both familiarity and intrigue. Red berries provide immediate brightness and accessibility, while the datura adds a distinctive character that sets this apart from more conventional fruity florals. The patchouli base grounds everything with earthy warmth, and white musk keeps the overall effect smooth and intimate. This is a fragrance that invites exploration, rewarding attention to its layered complexity.
