The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nubes arrived in 2018 as part of Wide Society's opening act, a collective of fragrance enthusiasts who believed scent could capture a moment, not just a mood. The name is Spanish for clouds, and perfumer Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann built the composition around that weightless, wandering quality. Violet and iris form the heart, soft florals that feel like looking up at a pale sky. The drydown anchors everything in sandalwood and vanilla, warmth that stays close to the skin, never announcing itself. It's the olfactory equivalent of moving through the world without leaving a trace.
What makes Nubes interesting is the way the powdery florals don't overwhelm. Iris has a natural coolness, almost metallic at its edges, while violet is delicate and nostalgic. Together they create a floralcy that feels restrained rather than lush. Hedione adds transparency, a lifting effect that keeps the heart from becoming heavy. The base is where the craft shows: sandalwood and vanilla could easily tip into sweetness, but myrrh and vetiver keep the drydown grounded. Tonka bean adds a quiet creaminess without making the composition feel dense. It's a powdery fragrance that refuses to be precious.
The evolution
The opening is clean and bright, bergamot citrus with a green, slightly medicinal lift from the angelica root. It doesn't announce itself loudly. Within twenty minutes, the florals begin to take over, and Nubes becomes unmistakably itself: powdery, soft, intimate. The violet and iris dominate the heart, with hedione adding a transparent, almost transparent quality that makes the florals feel like they're floating. This middle phase lasts for hours, the florals slowly deepening as the base begins to emerge. The drydown is warm and close: sandalwood and vanilla blend into something creamy and skin-like, with tonka bean adding a quiet sweetness beneath. Myrrh brings a whisper of resinous depth, and vetiver keeps the whole thing from becoming too sweet. The final impression is intimate, sillage that stays close, presence that lingers without demanding attention.
Cultural impact
Nubes occupies a specific niche: powdery without being dated, soft without being weak. It appeals to wearers who want presence without projection, the kind of fragrance that rewards proximity rather than announcing itself. In a landscape of assertive ouds and bold florals, Nubes offers something quieter. The violet-iris combination is distinctive in this register, avoiding the trap of becoming either too sweet or too austere. It performs best in cooler seasons and intimate settings, office days, quiet evenings, moments where the fragrance is a companion rather than a statement.
