Heritage
A house, in its own words
Wide Society was founded in 2018 by a loosely organized collective of fragrance enthusiasts based in the Netherlands. The founders, who describe themselves as a "wide society" of friends and independent perfumers, sought to create a platform that could launch experimental scents without the overhead of a traditional house. Their first public offering, Up in the Air, appeared in the spring of 2018 and was followed quickly by Nubes, Sign of Times, Suite#6, Night Train and Acqua Travelis, all released within the same year. The rapid succession of launches demonstrated the group’s ability to coordinate production, design, and distribution on a tight timeline. Coverage on Fragrantica and Basenotes documented the brand’s debut, noting the minimalist packaging and the decision to limit each launch to 500 bottles. In 2019 Wide Society participated in the niche perfume expo in Paris, where it introduced a limited‑edition version of Night Train with a matte black bottle. By 2020 the label expanded its sourcing network to include sustainable ambergris alternatives from the Mediterranean, reflecting a growing awareness of ethical material choices. A 2022 collaboration with a Dutch independent perfumer resulted in a reinterpretation of Acqua Travelis, adding a marine note that was highlighted in an article on Now Smell This. Throughout its short history, Wide Society has maintained a consistent ethos: to provide a curated set of scents that feel personal, contemporary, and approachable, while operating outside the constraints of large‑scale commercial perfume houses.
The brand’s creative vision centers on the idea that fragrance can capture a fleeting experience and translate it into a wearable memory. Wide Society treats each scent as a narrative fragment, drawing inspiration from travel, weather, and urban rhythm. Rather than chasing trends, the label emphasizes authenticity, allowing the olfactory story to dictate the composition. The collective values transparency in ingredient selection and encourages dialogue with its community through social media, where feedback often informs future releases. Sustainability is woven into the philosophy; the brand prefers ingredients that are either naturally renewable or synthetically produced with a reduced environmental footprint. This pragmatic approach reflects a belief that luxury does not require excess, but rather thoughtful curation and respect for both the wearer and the planet.
