The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Things Ahead comes from West Third Brand. The composition is the work of perfumer Michael Loring Probst, built around an aromatic-spicy structure that leans green and mossy rather than warm or sweet. The fragrance opens with a bright burst of grapefruit softened by the creamy, almost soapy lift of orange blossom, a combination that feels lifted and airy rather than syrupy. Beneath that initial flash, sage and nutmeg begin to surface, lending the composition an herbal, slightly cooling counterweight. The base anchors everything with orris root, that powdery-violet root note prized in classical perfumery, layered against oakmoss and the subtle peppery warmth of pimento leaf.
What sets Things Ahead apart is how it handles the green-aromatic territory. This one threads grapefruit and sage against orris root and oakmoss, a pairing that pulls the composition toward something almost mineral, closer to the smell of wet stone after rain than to anything fruity or food-like. The nutmeg and pimento leaf add warmth without tipping into spice-cabinet territory, sitting low in the background like embers rather than crackling forward. The result reads more like a walk through damp garden paths than a typical citrus-spice blend.
The evolution
The first few sprays are sharp and green. Grapefruit and orange blossom carry the opening with a clean brightness that doesn't try too hard to impress. The grapefruit reads more like the bitter, pithy rind than the juicy fruit, and the orange blossom adds a soft, honeyed floral counterpoint that keeps things from going austere. Soon, the orris root and oakmoss start emerging, pulling the composition downward and inward. The nutmeg adds a quiet warmth that wasn't there at the start, slowly unfurling from beneath the brighter top notes. Sage sits in the middle layer, giving the heart an herbal backbone that prevents it from going powdery or losing its grip on the green character. As hours pass, the drydown leans mossy and slightly earthy, with the orris taking on a denser, almost root-like quality.
Cultural impact
Things Ahead sits within West Third Brand's Société de Senteur collection, a series that draws on classical perfumery structures and reworks them with the brand's own sensibility. The orris and oakmoss combination gives it enough complexity to interest fragrance enthusiasts while remaining accessible enough for everyday wear. It rewards someone who pays attention to how the notes shift and layer over the course of a wear, from the grapefruit-led opening to the mossy, orris-anchored drydown.
