The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Santiago Burgas Bou approached the 2021 brief with a clear directive: bottle the feeling of a tide-washed cliff at dawn. His response begins with bergamot, chosen for its sharp clarity, like the first light breaking over the Bay of Biscay. Rather than reaching for exotic citrus or tropical fruits, he stayed close to European perfumery traditions, selecting bergamot from Calabria as a nod to both Mediterranean and Basque sensibilities. From there, he mapped the region's native flora onto the heart, grounding jasmine and iris with violet leaf's green, slightly briny note. The result is unmistakably coastal without resorting to marine accords or synthetic ozonic materials.
The note philosophy behind Esentzia54 reflects URBIETA14's broader commitment to Basque geography. Bergamot represents the clarity of morning light; violet leaf evokes wet stone and coastal vegetation; frankincense and tobacco anchor the fragrance to the earthy, sometimes austere character of the region's cliffs. Each note was selected not for novelty but for geographical and emotional accuracy. The pairing of jasmine with iris is intentional: together they create a powdery floral core that feels cool and restrained rather than opulent. The drydown materials, particularly frankincense and tobacco, were chosen to extend the fragrance's life on skin while maintaining a sense of place.
The evolution
The scent begins the moment it touches skin. Bergamot projects cleanly for the first ten to fifteen minutes, projecting an image of morning citrus and cold sea air. As the citrus fades, jasmine and iris emerge, slowly and deliberately, the iris lending a quiet powderiness that balances jasmine's floral intensity. Violet leaf acts as a bridge, its green, slightly aquatic character connecting the bright opening to the warmer base. Over the next two hours, musk and amber establish themselves, sandalwood adds creamy depth, and frankincense introduces a faint resinous smoke. Tobacco appears last, lingering in the drydown as a dry, almost mineral finish that echoes the grey skies of the Basque coast. The arc is deliberate, unhurried, and rewards the wearer who can wait for the heart and base to unfold.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Esentzia54 has become a reference point for modern Basque perfumery, praised for marrying bright citrus with a smoky animalic base. Wearers note its confidence‑boosting aura, making it a favorite for evening outings and creative gatherings, while its unisex nature invites a diverse crowd that appreciates a scent that feels both coastal and grounded.
