The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Version Sport arrived as part of Ulric de Varens' Jacques Saint Pres line, a collection the house has used to reimagine classic masculine fragrance traditions through a modern lens. The concept here is fougère turned assertive: the traditional barbershop structure of lavender, oakmoss, and tonka stretched over a brighter, sportier chassis. Lime and bergamot lead the charge at the top, pink pepper adds a controlled snap, and the whole composition gets grounded by leather, frankincense, and patchouli in the base. The juice itself leans into a deliberate tension between the clean and the dark. Up top, it reads almost like an energy drink, sharp citrus and cool spice bouncing off each other. But underneath that brightness sits a base that pulls toward church incense and old bookshelves.
The interesting choice here is the heart. Black tea alongside lavender and clary sage is uncommon, and it does a lot of quiet work. Most fougères lean fully aromatic, herbaceous, and clean from start to finish, relying on the lavender-moss-tonka trio to carry the structure. Adding black tea introduces a tannic, slightly bitter edge that keeps the composition from collapsing into barbershop cliché. It bridges the bright citrus top and the darker, resinous base, giving the middle phase a moment of dry, contemplative warmth before the leather fully takes over.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all speed. Lime cuts the air, bergamot rounds the edges, and pink pepper sparks just enough to register as heat without burning. The opening reads bright, sharp, almost effervescent, a clean burst of citrus and cool spice that announces itself clearly. Then the black tea arrives, and the whole composition slows down. Lavender and clary sage settle in alongside that tannic tea note, creating a dry, herbal-floral middle that smells like clean linen left in a window, crisp and slightly bitter. Around the two-hour mark, the leather surfaces, warm and slightly sweet, and the frankincense adds a resinous, almost meditative depth. Patchouli and oakmoss anchor the base, with tonka bean providing a soft, ambery cushion underneath that smooths the transition from sharp to dense.
Cultural impact
Version Sport occupies a particular corner of the fougère category, one defined by a dark, resinous base rather than the bright, clean drydown that tends to dominate modern sport fragrances. The combination of leather, frankincense, and oakmoss gives it a depth and seriousness that sets it apart from the lighter, more aquatic-leaning options in the broader sport fragrance market. The result is a composition that reads as versatile: the citrus and lavender opening makes it presentable for daytime wear, while the moss and leather base gives it enough gravity to hold its own in evening settings.
