The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fragrance designer Frank Voelkl created Maritime in 2016 as an aromatic-marine scent drawing its inspiration from the sea itself. The brief, according to Tommy Bahama's vision, was simple: bottle the feeling of dynamism that a rolling wave carries, not just the calm of a beach, but the energy of open water. The official copy frames it as an ode to the pleasure of sailing, to the power and momentum of the sea in motion. Voelkl himself described the top notes as hooking the wearer immediately, the way a wave catches and pulls. As it builds, the heart emerges and crests, like a wave gaining height before it breaks. Maritime was designed to mirror that arc: an initial burst of energy, then a slow unfurling that builds into something complete.
The note structure is where Maritime earns its name. Clary sage and lavender form the aromatic foundation, herbal, slightly camphoraceous, unmistakably coastal. Bergamot and pink pepper in the top give it that sharp, bracing opening that reads like sea spray. The heart introduces water lily and violet leaf, which keep the aquatic quality grounded in something more botanical than synthetic. Jasmine and geranium add a quiet floral complexity that prevents the middle from feeling flat. The base, musk, cedarwood, sandalwood, and moss, grounds everything in warmth. The moss is the quiet standout: mineral, slightly earthy, it reads as coastal rock rather than forest floor.
The evolution
The opening hits with an immediate citrusy burst, bergamot and pink pepper arriving together, sharp and clean. Clary sage and lavender follow within seconds, tempering the brightness with their herbal warmth. For the first 30 minutes, Maritime reads as bright, clean, and energizing. The heart begins to emerge around the 45-minute mark as the citrus fades: water lily and violet leaf introduce a cooler, slightly ozonic quality. The jasmine and geranium add a quiet floral layer that prevents the middle from feeling flat or purely aquatic. By hour two, the drydown takes over. Cedarwood and sandalwood arrive first, bringing a dry woody warmth. Musk lingers underneath, soft and skin-like. The moss adds a mineral, coastal depth that ties the whole composition together. On most skin types, Maritime lasts 4-6 hours before fading to a quiet skin-close presence. The sillage is moderate throughout, present in the first hour, then settling into something intimate and close. It doesn't fill a room. It stays with you.
Cultural impact
Maritime fills a specific niche: fresh, pleasant, and uncomplicated. It performs best in spring and summer, particularly in daytime and casual settings. The fragrance resonates most strongly with wearers who want something clean and aquatic without the heavy projection or complex development of a niche scent. Community ratings reflect broad satisfaction with the scent quality and value for money, though longevity sits in the moderate range, a trade-off for a fragrance that prioritizes easy wear over dramatic presence.
