The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thomas Kosmala built his house in London in 2014, trained in Paris, and spent years moving away from oud-focused compositions toward something classically French. Nº4 Sport belongs to the Après l'Amour collection, a family that includes the original Nº4 and its neon variant. The brief seems simple: take a number and make it sport. What emerged instead was a contradiction. A sport fragrance that refuses to smell like one.
The composition leans tropical where the name suggests aquatic. Bergamot, grapefruit, and lemon open bright and tart, the expected citrus trifecta. But the heart is agave, melon, and pineapple, and that's where the deception lives. Agave adds body and a faintly honeyed warmth that pushes the whole thing away from fresh and toward sweet. The ozonic and sea water base keeps it from becoming cloying, but the dominant impression is humid warmth, skin after exercise in tropical heat, not a cool shower after a run. It's a clever subversion of category expectations, trading the sharp marine freshness most sport fragrances deliver for something warmer and more interesting.
The evolution
The opening hits tart and bright, grapefruit and lemon cutting through, bergamot threading underneath. For the first twenty minutes, it's everything the name promises. Then the melon arrives and the game changes. Agave and pineapple settle in, and the whole composition shifts from crisp to warm. The citrus doesn't disappear, it sweetens, like fruit left in the sun. The drydown is where this earns its reputation. Ozonic notes and sea water arrive late, but they don't bring the cool aquatic finish most would expect. Instead they read as mineral warmth, the smell of skin in humid air, not ocean spray. On most skin, this holds for 8-10 hours. On clothing, it can last through a wash cycle.
Cultural impact
The reception has been polarizing in the best way. Wearers either love the tropical warmth or feel deceived by the name. Those who embrace the melon-agave heart call it a perfect summer signature. Others expected the cool aquatic freshness the Sport label typically promises. The comparison to BR540 surfaces regularly, fruity, sweet, with performance that outlasts expectations. It's a fragrance that divides and rewards in equal measure.
