The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jordi Fernández built Sandalo Australia around a single conviction: Australian sandalwood deserves to lead. Not as a substitute for something else. As the thing itself. The fragrance launches in 2022 as part of the Accordi di Profumo collection, The Merchant of Venice's collaboration with Givaudan on sustainable, responsibly sourced ingredients. The brief was to reinterpret iconic perfumery materials with an eye toward the future. Fernández chose sandalwood for its versatility, the way it holds warmth without heaviness, how it works across skin types and seasons. No grand gesture. Just a fragrance that earns its place on any dresser.
What makes this work is the contrast. Australian sandalwood is naturally creamy, with a clean finish that leans slightly coconut. Haitian vetiver is the counterweight, mineral, smoky, with a mineral-earthiness that keeps the sweetness from floating away. Tonka bean threads through the middle, adding a warm powderiness that could tip into candy if the other notes weren't there to hold it down. Amber does what amber does: adds depth without drama. The result is a composition that feels cohesive from first spray to final fade. Nothing fights for attention. Everything stays.
The evolution
Spray it on and the first thing you notice is a brief, cool herbal touch, something aromatic that doesn't announce itself. Vetiver's mineral edge arrives within minutes, followed quickly by the sandalwood asserting itself as the dominant voice. The tonka bean sweetness builds gradually, softening the wood as the hours pass. By the mid-stage, the fragrance has settled into something warm and powdery, the sandalwood now fully creamy against the amber backbone. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its reputation. Sandalwood and amber linger close to the skin for 6-8 hours, with tonka bean's sweetness the last note to fade, a warm whisper that stays until evening. The sillage never becomes overwhelming. Moderate from start to finish. You have to lean in to catch it. That's the point.
Cultural impact
Sandalo Australia sits comfortably in the tradition of warm, woody fragrances that prioritize wearability over novelty. The combination of creamy sandalwood with tonka bean's powdery sweetness and vetiver's mineral edge makes it an approachable entry point for someone curious about woody compositions. Released in 2022 as part of the Accordi di Profumo collection, the fragrance represents the house's commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing through its partnership with Givaudan.
