Why it exists.
The beginning
Patchouli Indonesia arrived in 2022 as part of The Merchant of Venice's Accordi di Profumo collection, an eight-piece lineup built around responsibly sourced ingredients and the brand's ongoing partnership with Givaudan. The collection reframes classic perfumery materials through a sustainability lens, tracing each note back to its terroir and the communities that cultivate it. Indonesian patchouli was the obvious headline ingredient, and perfumer Marion Costero built the composition around its earthy gravity rather than against it. The result is a fragrance that doesn't disguise the note behind brighteners or sweeteners. It centers it, lets the cedar and bergamot open the door, and then lets the patchouli take the room.
What makes this composition work is restraint. Indonesian patchouli can go swampy, medicinal, or aggressively hippie, and Costero doesn't fight that tendency so much as redirect it. The cedar gives the drydown a structural backbone, the bergamot pulls a thread of brightness through the first twenty minutes, and the tobacco deepens the resinous undertone without turning the whole thing smoky.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to bergamot and cedar, bright and almost architectural, the kind of opening that makes you think this might be a clean woody fragrance. Then the patchouli arrives, not gradually but all at once, and the temperature shifts. By the thirty-minute mark the composition has settled into its real register, earthy and dark, with a chocolate-adjacent sweetness underneath that one wearer called "a linear smooth/earthy/chocolatey patchouli." The tobacco threads through the middle hours, never loud, always present, adding a cured-leaf warmth that keeps the patchouli from going flat. The sillage is moderate for the first three hours, close enough that you lean in to catch it. After six hours the cedar reasserts itself in the drydown, and what remains on skin the next morning is a quiet, woody warmth with just a ghost of the patchouli still intact. It doesn't disappear. It just gets polite about it.
