The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Poivre Gris is The Grey's first extrait de parfum. The Grey built it for men who want presence without volume, a scent that settles into skin rather than projecting across a room. The name itself, French for "grey pepper," nods to the composition's central tension: spice without aggression, warmth without sweetness. Pink pepper and black pepper bookend the composition, framing everything between them. Released in 2026, it stands as a first release from the house. The opening is crisp, luminous, almost cautious. Lime, mandarin, bergamot, pink pepper, and saffron arrive in a measured sequence, each one precise. Nothing crowds the first ten minutes.
What makes Poivre Gris structurally interesting is the pepper layering. Pink pepper handles the opening, bright and slightly fruity, lifting the citrus with a soft snap. Then black pepper arrives at the heart, darker, smokier, more grounded. The transition between the two peppers is where the composition does its real work, because the composition never treats them as a single block. Instead, the pink pepper fades back into the blend just as the black pepper rises, and there's a brief window where both are audible at once, one cooling while the other heats.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to citrus and pink pepper. Lime and mandarin cut through, bright and almost fizzy, with bergamot underneath adding a bitter edge. Pink pepper pops like static, brief and sharp, before saffron arrives and warms the whole opening into something golden. The citrus reads less like a single note and more like a chord, each of the three playing off the others in a measured sequence. Around the forty-minute mark, the citrus recedes and black pepper steps forward. That handoff is gradual, with the pink pepper still visible in the background while the black pepper claims the center. Cedarwood grounds the heart alongside jasmine, which adds just enough softness to keep the pepper from burning. The jasmine here is restrained, more like white petals than a bouquet, there to round edges rather than announce itself.
Cultural impact
Poivre Gris arrives in 2026 as The Grey's debut extrait, a first release from a house that has chosen to enter perfumery at its highest concentration rather than working up from lighter formats. The composition leans into a restrained pepper-led structure, with both pink and black pepper framed by saffron, cedarwood, jasmine, amber, musk, and patchouli. The result is a woody-spicy profile that feels deliberate rather than decorative. With its measured opening, considered heart, and close-wearing drydown, the fragrance stakes out a clear identity built on tension between spice and warmth.
