The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Obsidian Stone arrived in 2026 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. Perfumer Mahsam Raza built it around a simple brief: take the cool, dark stillness of volcanic rock and translate it into something wearable. A unisex composition aimed at anyone who gravitates toward fresh citrus, aromatic greens, smooth woods, and warm earthy undertones. Not a loud fragrance. Not a soft one either. Something in between, with weight you don't notice until it's gone.
What makes the structure interesting is the pivot from bright to grounded. Cardamom and bergamot carry the opening with a clean green snap, but they hand off quickly to lavender and sandalwood, which carry most of the mid-phase. Cypriol sits in that middle register, giving the composition a dry, smoky earthiness that pulls it away from standard fresh-woody territory. The base finishes with tonka, musk, and vetiver, building warmth without tipping into sweetness. Raza's choice to keep the vanilla-leaning accords restrained gives the drydown a cooler, more mineral quality.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are bright and almost sharp. Bergamot and cardamom give it a lifted, aromatic quality, almost like stepping outside into cool morning air. The green notes underneath keep it from feeling like a citrus cologne, adding a leafy, just-cut quality. By the thirty-minute mark the lavender takes the lead, and the whole thing shifts into something softer and more herbal. Sandalwood arrives almost immediately after, smoothing the edges and adding a creamy warmth that keeps the lavender from going too medicinal. Around the two-hour mark the base begins to surface. Tonka bean introduces a soft sweetness, but it never takes over. Musk wraps everything together, keeping it close to the skin, and vetiver adds a dry, rooty earthiness underneath. By hour four the citrus is a memory, the lavender has mellowed into something almost powdery, and what remains is a warm, woody, slightly sweet base that lingers into hour five and six. On fabric the next morning, it reads as a soft, clean musk with a trace of sandalwood still holding.
Cultural impact
The Obsidian Stone fits within The Dua Brand's broader play: accessible compositions that borrow the structure of established designer and niche fragrances. Wearers who reach for it tend to want something clean and structured enough for daily wear but with enough vetiver and sandalwood weight to feel deliberate. It sits comfortably in a rotation alongside other aromatic woody compositions, and its restrained sweetness makes it an easy reach for cooler months without becoming a cold-weather exclusive.
