The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Living Soul arrived in 2025 from The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza as part of the Inspired Expression collection. The brief reads like a portrait of someone settled into themselves, no longer performing warmth but simply radiating it. Angelica and bergamot open with clarity, not brightness. There's bourbon in the top, but it behaves more like aged wood than a drink. Raza built this one to sit close to the skin, an oriental that wears inward.
The interesting choice here is Mysore sandalwood sharing the heart with vanilla absolute and ambrette seed. That trio creates a creamy, skin-muscled texture that most orientals achieve with synthetic musks, and the pairing gives the composition a quiet substance that feels rare in this register. The angelica in the opening is unusual too, adding a green-spicy lift that separates Living Soul from the usual citrus-and-spice template. There's something almost botanical about the way that angelica threads through the first minutes, like crushed stems and cool herb tucked under a warm heart.
The evolution
Living Soul opens with a brisk lift of angelica and bergamot cut by citrus-orange brightness, a brief sparkle before the warmer layers arrive. Bourbon whiskey slides in within minutes, rounding the citrus with a boozy, caramel-edged warmth that feels closer to a tumbler than a top note. As the minutes pass, vanilla absolute and Mysore sandalwood build a creamy, woody heart, joined by amber, ambrette seed, and musk that deepen the texture without dulling it. In the final hour, Sumatran benzoin and Spanish cistus take over, leaving a quiet resinous trail on skin and fabric. The shift is gradual rather than abrupt, and each stage hands off cleanly to the next, so the whole arc reads as one continuous gesture rather than a series of disconnected notes. The citrus spark fades early but its brightness lingers in memory, making the warm bourbon heart feel even rounder by comparison.
Cultural impact
Living Soul draws from a rich oriental palette, and the composition itself does most of the talking. Angelica and bergamot open with green-spicy lift, bourbon whiskey rounds the entry with caramel-edged warmth, and Mysore sandalwood anchors a creamy heart alongside vanilla absolute and ambrette seed. The amber and musk deepen the texture without weighing it down, while Sumatran benzoin and Spanish cistus bring a resinous finish that lingers close to skin. It's the kind of structure that rewards attention, with each note revealing itself in sequence rather than all at once.
