The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand has built its catalog around reconstruction, the art of decoding well-known olfactory architectures and reassembling them. Depths of Desire, released in 2025 under the perfumer Mahsam Raza, sits in the brand's Inspired Expression collection, and the formula reads like a love letter to Nishane's Deziro. That's the architectural template: an aquatic fougere that braids marine brightness against aromatic greens and earthy roots. The name itself is the brief. Not the surface of desire, the depth. The place where brine meets bark and neither flinches. The top notes open with mandarin orange, ambergris, and a marine accord that carries the salinity of ocean air without sliding into the ozonic flatness that drowns so many aquatic compositions.
The unusual move here is putting carrot seed in the heart. Carrot seed brings an earthy, almost root-vegetable sweetness that anchors the aquatic notes to something grown rather than synthetic. Pair it with star anise and the composition gets a faint licorice flicker. The geranium adds the green fougère geometry, and cypriol drags the whole thing toward warm, smoky earth. That tension, between cold water and dry heat, is what makes this composition feel like a place rather than a list of ingredients. Mint sharpens the entry point. Cypriol softens everything that follows.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are loud. Mandarin brings a sharp citrus peel, ambergris adds the oceanic salt-and-skin quality that makes marine accords feel lived-in rather than lab-built. Aquatic notes bloom alongside, giving the opening a wide, breezy clarity. By the forty-minute mark the composition pivots hard. The citrus retreats. Star anise and mint cut through with a clean, almost mentholated brightness, while carrot seed grounds the whole accord in something earthy and vegetal. Geranium stitches it together with its green-rose thread. Around the two-hour line, the aquatic brightness is gone and the base takes over. Ambrettolide wraps everything in a clean, second-skin musk that doesn't announce itself. Vetiver brings the smoke and earthy facets. Sandalwood smooths the drydown into something warm and woody.
Cultural impact
Depths of Desire, launched in 2025 under The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, offers a faithful yet materially reworked interpretation of Nishane's Deziro. The formula places mandarin orange, ambergris, and marine notes at the top while grounding the composition in vetiver, sandalwood, and ambrettolide. By combining these materials, perfumer Mahsam Raza crafts a composition that balances freshness with depth, aquatic brightness anchored by earthy roots. The release speaks to a growing interest in compositions that refuse to flatten into simple categories, fragrances that ask to be worn and reconsidered over time.
