The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Agadir takes its name from Morocco's Atlantic coastal city, a place defined by the meeting of ocean and arid hillsides. Swiss Arabian released this composition in 2019 as part of their collection of citrus aromatic fragrances for men. The name does the work of describing the scent itself before you've smelled a thing. A city where two very different terrains share the same horizon line. Mediterranean coastline on one side, Moroccan hinterland on the other. Fresh water and dry earth in the same breath. The composition lives in that gap, never committing fully to one landscape. You get the brightness of coastal citrus up top, the cooling pull of salt air in the heart, and then a slow slide into something rooty, mineral, almost sun-baked by the time the base settles in.
Most aquatic fragrances stop at the waterline. They give you ozone, maybe a splash of marine accord, and that's where the conversation ends. Agadir takes the unusual step of bringing cypriol oil, also known as nagarmotha, into the middle of the composition. Cypriol is a root oil with an earthy, slightly smoky character that smells like vetiver's more contemplative cousin. It grounds the seawater rather than letting it float. The lavender on top is doing something clever too. Instead of the clean, almost shampoo-like lavender you find in most masculine aromatics, it sits next to Amalfi lemon and fruit accords that sweeten it just enough to keep the opening from smelling clinical.
The evolution
First 30 minutes are all brightness. The Amalfi lemon arrives sharp and confident, paired with a fruit accord that adds roundness without going candy-sweet. Lavender threads through it, keeping things from tipping into tropical territory. Then something unexpected. The seawater note surfaces not as a screeching ozonic blast but as a soft mineral wash, like the smell of waves retreating from warm sand. The cypriol arrives almost immediately after, earthy and rooty, and it doesn't politely fade into the background. It takes over. What started as a Mediterranean coastal breeze becomes something drier, smokier, more like standing in the hills above that same coast after the sun has moved. The patchouli in the base adds a muted dampness, a soil-after-rain quality that keeps the cypriol from getting too austere. Amber wraps the whole drydown in a low-wattage warmth.
Cultural impact
Agadir joins Swiss Arabian's expanding catalog of masculine releases, carrying a name that evokes the Moroccan coastal city and its blend of Mediterranean, Atlantic, and North African influences. The 2019 launch reflects the brand's strategy of offering accessible Arabic-inspired fragrances to international audiences, particularly collectors exploring regional houses. Within enthusiast communities, the fragrance has drawn attention for its use of nagarmotha (cypriol), a note with deep roots in traditional Arabic perfumery.
