The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ruby Naga arrived in 2022 as part of Harrods' La Collection Serpent, a line celebrating the opulence of the Knightsbridge flagship. Stéphane Humbert Lucas designed the fragrance to echo the store's luxurious aura, choosing a vivid ruby-red fruit opening that instantly recalls the vibrant energy of their iconic storefront. The name evokes the serpent, a creature of seduction and power, woven into Harrods' decorative heritage. With Ruby Naga, Humbert Lucas translated this imagery into scent, creating a composition that mirrors the brand's theatrical merchandising and its tradition of sensory excess.
Humbert Lucas approached Ruby Naga's note selection with a clear philosophy: contrast and complement. The opening's bright fruits are meant to shock and delight, capturing attention the way a display of rubies would in a jeweler's window. The heart introduces floral elegance, referencing classical perfumery while remaining modern in execution. The drydown, with its tonka and amber, grounds the fragrance in warmth and sensuality, ensuring it becomes a personal experience rather than a room-filling statement. This progression from bold to intimate mirrors how luxury itself is often experienced, from public display to private indulgence.
The evolution
The fragrance opens like a burst of ripe berries on a marble counter, with Raspberry and Lychee commanding attention immediately. Almond adds an edible richness while Peach provides soft, lingering sweetness. The top notes are juicy, vibrant, and unapologetically bold, setting the tone for what follows. Within twenty minutes, the heart begins to reveal itself, centered around Orris Root's powdery elegance. Rose and Orange Blossom bloom into the composition, their floral brightness softened by Jasmine's deeper, more complex character. Violet Leaf adds a whisper of green, preventing the heart from becoming overly sweet. As hours pass, the drydown takes over, transforming the scent into something intimate and warm. Tonka Bean and Vanilla emerge as a creamy, almost dessert-like foundation, supported by White Musk's clean softness. Woody Notes provide quiet structure while Crystal Amber lends a luminous, warm finish that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Ruby Naga has been praised for its luxurious fruit‑floral blend, often cited as a standout in Harrods’ niche offerings. Reviewers note its ability to command attention without overwhelming, positioning it as a go‑to choice for those seeking a sophisticated yet playful signature scent in the current luxury market.
