The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
London is part of Stefano Ricci's Cities of the World collection, a series of fragrances designed to bottle the atmosphere of iconic global destinations. The collection embraces the character of each city it represents, using olfactory cues rather than literal representation to communicate a sense of place. For London, the composition draws on fresh British notes of citrus fruits, rose and saffron scents of India, and a woody, soft finish that brings the whole structure together. The result is a fragrance that moves from sharp, bright citrus through a spiced floral heart into a warm, ambery base. It's not an attempt to replicate any specific London scent, but to capture its atmosphere through Stefano Ricci's lens, blending British character with the house's signature Tuscan craftsmanship.
What makes the composition interesting is its geographic layering. The opening draws on classically British-coded notes: citrus, lily of the valley, and apple, evoking freshness from the first spritz. But the heart introduces saffron and iris, spices and florals that reference the rose and saffron scents of India mentioned in the brand's own notes. The base settles into sandalwood, patchouli, and vanilla, warm woods with a gentle sweetness that grounds the composition.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost architectural. Bergamot and lemon hit cold and clean, with apple lending a crisp sweetness underneath. Lily of the valley softens the edges just enough to keep it from feeling clinical. It's brisk, composed, and unmistakably fresh. Then something shifts. The iris arrives first, powdery and cool, and the saffron follows close behind, warm and slightly leathery. Rose and jasmine tuck themselves into the background, never dominant but adding a lived-in floral texture. By hour two or three, the top notes have fully receded and the base takes over: sandalwood smooth and creamy, patchouli adding depth without going earthy, vanilla providing a quiet sweetness that never crosses into gourmand territory. The amber underneath ties everything together, holding the composition in a warm, cohesive register from start to finish.
Cultural impact
London sits within Stefano Ricci's Cities of the World collection, a series that captures the atmosphere of iconic global destinations through scent. The saffron-iris heart gives it a distinctive character among fresh woody compositions, lending it a spiced complexity that sets it apart from more straightforward citrus-forward fragrances. Within the collection, London reads as a study in contrast: the bright, bracing freshness of its opening gives way to a warm, contemplative base, making it one of the more layered entries in the Cities of the World lineup.
