The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Soul Couture's 2017 debut paired its inaugural fragrance with a ready-to-wear collection built around the concept of fabric meeting skin. Perfumer Michele Marin received what she described as a deceptively simple directive: capture the sensation of memory surfacing when cloth brushes against the body. Rather than pursue the expected route of woods or musks as a foundation, Marin chose to begin Love Twist with immediate vibrancy, letting the formula open into its full heart without preamble. The resulting fragrance treats the heart as both middle and foundation, with florals and woods sharing equal weight.
Marin selected these particular notes to embody the sensation of fabric brushing skin, choosing tuberose for its enveloping presence and red fruits for their associative freshness with laundering. The mandarin orange functions as an olfactory substitute for the crisp scent new clothes carry, while sandalwood and patchouli mirror the warm, static-charged quality fabric develops when worn close to the body. Musk bridges the gap between fragrance and skin, creating the impression that Love Twist originated from the body rather than being applied to it. This philosophy shapes the entire composition, resulting in a fragrance that feels less composed than emergent.
The evolution
The journey begins the moment the bottle opens, where mandarin orange and red fruits create a burst of brightness that feels almost effervescent against the skin. Within minutes, tuberose emerges as the dominant voice, its narcotic creaminess tempered by ylang-ylang's tropical floral facets. Rose adds a delicate softness while sandalwood introduces warmth, and patchouli grounds the ensemble with an earthy sensibility that keeps the florals from tipping into pure sweetness. Musk provides a skin-close quality that makes the drydown feel like a natural continuation rather than a conclusion. By the final hours, the fragrance settles into a warm woodsy-musky haze where sandalwood and patchouli linger alongside a persistent red fruit sweetness.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Love Twist has become a quiet favorite among niche collectors who value its blend of bright fruit and elegant white florals. Its unisex appeal and modest price have secured spots on boutique shelves from Milan to Philadelphia, often mentioned alongside Soul Couture’s other sartorial releases.
